Specialist occupational health for rescue readiness

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers, with the right qualifications.

Mine rescue medical requirements are not identical across Australia. These answers explain the general position and make dependencies clear.

What is a mine rescue medical?
It is a role-specific health assessment used to help determine whether a worker is medically suitable to progress to rescue testing, training or duties. Requirements depend on jurisdiction, mine type, rescue role and the applicable guideline.
Who needs one?
It may be required for underground mine rescue members, emergency response team personnel, coal mine workers nominated for rescue duties and existing personnel due for reassessment. The employer, mine operator, rescue organisation or governing scheme should confirm whether it applies.
How is it different from a standard mining medical?
Rescue work can involve sustained exertion, breathing apparatus, heat and constrained environments. Some pathways therefore apply more stringent medical criteria or add a specific physical-fitness assessment. The Queensland underground coal pathway is one example; it should not be generalised to every state or mine.
How long does an appointment take?
No verified appointment duration is currently available for this business. Duration depends on the components booked, the jurisdiction and whether further tests or clinical information are needed. Your confirmation should state the expected time.
What should I bring?
Typically, candidates may be asked for photo identification, referral paperwork, a medication list or original labelled packaging, usual glasses or hearing aids, and relevant medical reports. Follow the exact list in your booking confirmation.
Is a fitness or step test included?
It depends. Queensland’s current underground coal mine rescue guideline includes a VO₂ max step-test pathway. Other jurisdictions, rescue organisations or employers may use different assessments. Confirm the protocol before attending.
Will my employer receive my complete medical record?
That should not be assumed. Health information is sensitive, and disclosure depends on consent, law and the applicable scheme. Ask what outcome document will be supplied, to whom, and whether any clinical detail beyond the required result is included.
What happens if further information is required?
The assessing doctor may ask for a treating-doctor or specialist report, further investigation or clarification before making a decision. This is not automatically a failed result. The provider should explain what is needed and how to supply it securely.
Can an employer book an entire team?
Employers can submit a team enquiry with personnel numbers, timeframe, location and jurisdiction. Actual capacity, clinic availability, onsite delivery and pricing remain subject to confirmation.
How frequently is reassessment required?
Frequency varies. Business Queensland states that underground coal mine rescue health assessments are currently required every two years for people up to age 40 and annually from age 40. Do not apply that interval to another jurisdiction or program without checking its current rules.
Can I send my medical reports through the website form?
No. The public forms are intentionally limited to contact and operational booking details. A secure clinical transfer process must be confirmed before medical records are sent.
